TV auditions differ from most other types of entertainment industry auditions in that they are usually held under very tight time constraints. There is not a lot of time between the writing, casting and filming schedule of a television production. Sometimes the scenes are shot within a week of being cast. Most of the roles available at TV auditions are for background players. Since most television shows already have the central handful of “regular” stars in place, the TV auditions are used to fill out the scenes with extras and background actors in both speaking and silent parts. The time between notice of the audition and the actual TV audition can also be very short. Directors may call for TV auditions just a day or two prior to the audition date, leaving very little time for memorizing lines and other character preparation.

Most TV auditions will have a crew filming the audition performances so the directors can review the auditions later. TV show audition scenes are often read utilizing crew members as assistant actors reading the alternate lines. Although this can be distracting, be sure to concentrate solely on your own performance. The directors know the actors may not have had any time to study their scripts and they do not expect complete memorization. Just don’t expect a big hug and friendly reception from the audition directors and staff. They are on a tight schedule and must be objective when making their decisions. Don’t take it personally, just do as you are told, give it your best and say thank you when it’s all over.
