Television auditions are different from most other types of entertainment industry auditions because they are completed in very short time schedules. Television productions go right from the written script to casting and filming in short order. In many productions the scenes are shot within a week of the auditions. There are not usually a lot major roles being cast at most television auditions, with most of the parts being cast for background extras. Television auditions are usually focused on the background roles, whether speaking parts or not.
You won’t get much advance notice for television auditions. The time between notice of the audition and the audition itself is also very short. Directors may call for television auditions just a day or two prior to the audition date. The whole process of television auditions can be hectic but actors are not expected to memorize entire scripts on such short notice however. Television auditions are often limited to brief spoken lines as a result.
Television auditions are often filmed so the directors can review the audition performances later. During most television auditions a casting director, an assistant, an executive producer, and a camera operator will be present. The directors know the actors may have only had a few days to study their scripts and they do not expect complete memorization. In these cases it is appropriate to read directly from the pages of the script during the television audition. Television auditions scenes can also be read utilizing crew members as assistant actors reading alternate lines. Although this may be distracting, don’t worry about the assistants and concentrate on your own performance instead.
